Security Update
The security situation in the Black Sea remains volatile, with ongoing Russian and Ukrainian military activity continuing to affect commercial shipping and port infrastructure. Recent incidents have included merchant vessels reportedly being damaged both alongside and underway, demonstrating that risks extend beyond conflict-affected ports and may be encountered across wider areas of the Black Sea.
In addition to missile, drone and electronic interference threats, recent reporting highlights a growing risk from drifting or floating hazards associated with the conflict, including unmanned surface vessels, military debris and other unexploded ordnance. These hazards have been reported well beyond the immediate conflict area and may present a threat to vessels operating throughout the region.
Members considering Black Sea calls should undertake voyage-specific risk assessments, monitor relevant navigational and military warnings, maintain a heightened lookout, and ensure appropriate contingency arrangements are in place. Particular attention should be given to unidentified objects or debris observed in the water.
