U.S. Maritime Advisory 2026-013: Houthi Attacks on Commercial Vessels
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has issued an updated advisory covering the continuing threat posed by Houthi forces to commercial shipping operating in the Red Sea, Bab el Mandeb Strait, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and Somali Basin. The advisory supersedes MARAD's previous notice on the subject and reiterates guidance for vessels transiting the region.
While reported attacks against merchant vessels have been relatively limited in recent months, MARAD maintains that the threat to commercial shipping remains and highlights the potential for missile, drone and other hostile activity, particularly against vessels with actual or perceived links to certain States. The advisory also emphasises the importance of voyage-specific risk assessments, security planning and engagement with established maritime reporting and information-sharing organisations.
