Security Update
The security situation in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman remains highly volatile, with recent attacks against commercial vessels indicating a widening threat footprint across the region. While the Strait of Hormuz continues to experience repeated attacks against merchant shipping, recent incidents suggest that kinetic activity is no longer confined to vessels transiting the waterway. Reported attacks have occurred north of Qatar, at UAE anchorages and in the vicinity of Sohar, Oman, highlighting potential risks to vessels operating throughout parts of the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, including those at anchor. Several incidents resulted in vessel damage and onboard fires, whilst casualties have also been reported. Both projectiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have featured in recent attacks.
Recent reports have also highlighted suspicious VHF communications directed at vessels anchored off the UAE, with warnings issued to depart designated anchorage areas.
Members trading in the region should keep voyage and operational risk assessments under continuous review and seek advice from flag administrations, naval liaison organisations and maritime security providers as appropriate. Vessel operators should ensure crews remain familiar with ship security procedures, contingency plans and emergency communications arrangements. Particular consideration should be given to maintaining a high level of situational awareness, closely monitoring VHF communications, reporting suspicious activity promptly to the relevant authorities, and ensuring bridge teams are prepared to respond to rapidly changing security conditions.
Members should continue to monitor updates issued by UKMTO, JMIC, naval authorities and professional maritime security providers, and obtain voyage-specific security advice where operations are planned within affected areas.
