Brazil | El Niño: Amazon Waterways

Recent analysis published by Rabb Carvalho Advogados (RCLaw) has highlighted growing concerns regarding navigation across Brazil’s Northern Arc, particularly within the Amazon river system.

Information Notices

Published: June 25, 2026

The potential development of El Niño conditions in the coming months may lead to reduced rainfall and an extended dry season, increasing the likelihood of low river levels and associated constraints on vessel operations.

These conditions have previously resulted in draft restrictions, reduced cargo capacity and wider disruption to logistics chains in the region. Given the increasing importance of the Northern Arc to Brazil’s export flows, any limitation to navigability may have broader operational and commercial implications. This notice outlines the developing situation and highlights key considerations for those trading in, or exposed to, the region.

Members are advised to review the full circular and seek appropriate advice prior to trading in the region. For updates and further information, Members should liaise with local agents or the Club’s correspondents, who can provide the most up-to-date guidance and advise on any operational changes affecting calls in the region.
