Further to a recent security incident that occurred in the Strait of Bab el Mandeb, where the security team of a commercial vessel fired upon local fishermen, the Club would bring to the attention of Members a recent advisory from JIMC on the situation regarding fishing activity in the Bab el Mandeb and Gulf of Aden areas. The advisory highlights that while groups of skiffs operating together may appear unusual, these patterns are largely linked to tuna fishing practices and seasonal influences.

Furthermore, some skiffs may follow larger vessels to take advantage of disturbed water attracting fish. Although this behaviour can seem suspicious, it is generally considered a normal pattern of life in these waters.
Security Reminder:

Ships transiting through the Gulf of Aden and Bab el Mandeb should continue to implement established security measures, including:

  • Maintaining high vigilance and enhanced lookout for small craft activity.
  • Adhering to BMP5 guidelines (Best Management Practices), such as:
    • Increased speed where possible.
    • Use of physical barriers and citadel arrangements.
    • Continuous monitoring of radar and AIS for unusual approaches.
    • Coordinating with Maritime Security Centres and reporting any suspicious behaviour promptly.

These steps remain critical to mitigate risks in these areas, even when observed activity is likely fishing-related.
