Palm oil and its derivatives may not be classified as hazardous cargoes but carrying them successfully is not always straightforward. Preserving cargo quality requires good preparation, careful temperature management and close monitoring from the moment the tanks are prepared until discharge is completed.
Palm oil is particularly sensitive to water, contamination, oxidation and changes in temperature. If the cargo is allowed to cool too much, it may begin to solidify and become difficult to pump. If temperatures fluctuate around its melting point, the cargo can separate into heavier and lighter layers. This may result in inconsistent samples, solids collecting near the bottom of the tank and problems during stripping or discharge.
Excessive or uneven heating can be just as damaging. Localised hot spots around the heating coils may cause discolouration or deterioration, while heating the cargo too quickly can create significant temperature differences within the tank. The aim is therefore not simply to keep the cargo warm, but to heat it gradually and evenly, following the agreed heating instructions and the requirements of the particular grade being carried.
Water is another major concern. It may enter the cargo through tanks or pipelines that have not been properly dried, condensation inside the tank, seawater ingress or leaking heating coils. Even a relatively small amount of moisture can affect cargo quality and contribute to an increase in free fatty acids. Tanks, lines and pumps should therefore be clean, dry and carefully inspected before loading, while heating coils should be pressure-tested and any cleaning chemicals fully removed from the cargo system.
The vessel’s previous cargoes and the condition of the cargo system also need careful consideration. Tanks should be suitable for carrying edible oils, coatings should be in good condition, and incompatible materials should not come into contact with the cargo. Different grades must also remain properly segregated, with particular attention paid to common pipelines, stripping arrangements and sampling points.
