The MASS Code – Key Principles & Requirements

The shipping industry is entering a new phase of technological development, with autonomous and remotely operated functions moving closer to reality. In recognition of this, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has adopted the International Code of Safety for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS Code), establishing the first international framework for the safe design, approval and operation of ships using these technologies.
Although the Code is currently non-mandatory, it provides a common international framework for the use of autonomous and remotely operated functions and sets out a wide range of operational, technical and safety related requirements.
This Risk Alert provides an overview of the MASS Code’s key principles and requirements, including matters such as system design, remote operations, human oversight, safety management and certification. It also highlights a number of practical considerations for Members as autonomous and remotely operated technologies continue to evolve.
