Denmark - New Regulations on Transfer of Oil Cargo between Ships

New regulations governing the ship to ship transfer of oil cargo in Danish territorial waters came into force in July 2007. The regulations apply to both Danish and foreign flagged vessels.

The provisions include:

  • advance notification requirements
  • an approved STS operator to supervise and guide the operation
  • obligations on masters of both the receiving and supplying vessel
  • transfer operations to comply with “Ship to Ship Transfer Guide (petroleum)” and certain prerequisite safety conditions
  • penalties for non-compliance, including fines and imprisionment of up to 2 years
