Steamship Mutual Strengthens its FD&D capability in Japan

Publications

Steamship Mutual announces the establishment of a Registered Foreign Lawyer (Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi) office in Tokyo, further strengthening its local FD&D capability and long-standing commitment to the Japanese market.

The GJB office is led by Thomas Davies, an English-qualified solicitor with over 20 years’ experience in private practice and the P&I sector, including extensive expertise in High Court litigation, LMAA arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.

Operating as an independent law office regulated by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the GJB will work closely with Steamship Mutual’s Tokyo office and provide English law advice to both Japanese and international Members where appropriate. Steamship Mutual will continue to work with Japanese law firms when local law advice or representation is required.

The opening of the GJB office reinforces Steamship Mutual’s long-standing commitment to the Japanese market and enhances its local service offering.

Head of the Club’s Eastern Syndicate, Rohan Bray, commented:

“We are excited to provide this claims and legal advice service to Steamship Mutual Members, especially through the engagement of a lawyer of Tom’s calibre and with his extensive experience in maritime law.  A considerable amount of time and effort was devoted to ensuring the GJB was fully compliant with local regulations and it is yet another demonstration of the Club’s long term commitment to the Japanese P&I market, a key theme of our upcoming Board Meetings in Tokyo and Imabari commencing on 25 January.”

The Club has also released a Circular in relation to this announcement.
