Limassol, Cyprus – 24th June 2025 – The Limassol office of Steamship Mutual hosted a seminar focusing on the latest developments surrounding The Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers and its implications for seafarers, shipowners and crew managers.
The seminar was led by Tony Nicholson, Claims Manager within the Americas Syndicate, with over 35 years of experience handling people-related claims and Chair of IG’s Philippine Working Group. Tony delivered a detailed and engaging presentation to an audience of some 70 maritime professionals, including shipowners and crew managers.
The first part of the seminar consisted of an overview of the background and key developments in Philippine law over several years, and The Magna Carta’s passage into law and its aims. The second part focused on Sec. 57 (Third Doctor) and Sec. 59 (Execution of Judgement and Monetary Awards) of The Magna Carta alongside practical examples, best practices, and recommendations for handling claims in the Philippines. Tony’s insights shed light on the evolving regulatory framework and its impact on seafarers, shipowners, crew managers, and the wider maritime industry.
Following the seminar, attendees were invited to a cocktail reception, providing an opportunity for further discussion and networking in a relaxed setting. We were delighted to see our partners and associates and we are thankful to all our guests for their attendance and engagement which is key to the success of these knowledge-sharing events.
Amongst other Club wide initiatives, the event forms part of Steamship Mutual’s ongoing commitment to keep Members informed on critical maritime issues, ensuring proactive compliance and operational readiness across the sector.
