Following the agreement on the United States–Iran Memorandum of Understanding, there are early indications that commercial transits through the Strait of Hormuz are beginning to resume. This remains an initial phase and should be viewed as a cautious, managed reopening rather than a return to normal operating conditions.
Following the announcement by both the U.S. and Iran for an opening of the Straits the maritime security threat level has been reduced to “Moderate”, as advised in JMIC Advisory Note 009-2026 – Strait of Hormuz Open.
- Mine risk remains present, with confirmed locations and ongoing clearance operations
- The International Traffic Separation Scheme should be avoided due to the risk of un-surveyed mines
- The southern transit route (Omani TTW) is identified as clear and remains the recommended passage
Members are recommended to undertake a voyage-specific risk assessment and to continue to follow established industry guidance, with particular emphasis on:
- Maintaining a cautious operating posture in a still-uncertain environment
- Adherence to recognised navigational and security best practice
- Ongoing reporting to UKMTO and relevant authorities to support situational awareness
The situation remains fluid and subject to change. Members should continue to monitor official advisories and apply prudent navigational judgement.
