Steel cargoes remain among the most commonly shipped cargoes at sea and continue to present a range of operational and cargo care challenges throughout loading, carriage and discharge. Cargo planning, cargo hold preparation, structural loading, hatch cover integrity, appropriate stowage, moisture control, ventilation management and careful cargo handling all play an important role in protecting steel cargoes and reducing the likelihood of cargo claims.
Failures in any of these areas may increase the risk of cargo shifting, structural damage, condensation and water ingress, potentially resulting in corrosion, cargo damage and costly cargo claims. Effective cargo care, monitoring and record keeping therefore remain important throughout the voyage.
In this Club Risk Alert, Taslim Imad outlines the principal risks associated with the carriage of steel cargoes and highlights loss prevention measures to help Members prevent cargo damage and reduce exposure to cargo-related claims.
