With the increasing challenges of drug smuggling at sea, Steamship Mutual, in collaboration with Marine Media Enterprises, is making the video “Drug Smuggling at Sea” freely available through the below link. Other programmes intended to educate, guide and inform seafarers on crew welfare and safety are available through the Donate & Train Scheme hosted by Marine Media Enterprises.
Ships are often targeted for drug smuggling activities, with crew members sometimes coerced and enticed into assisting in trafficking, risking both their careers and in some cases their personal freedom.
The international trafficking of illegal drugs causes harm to millions globally, ruining lives through addiction, imprisonment, and family suffering. Around half a million deaths occur yearly due to trafficked drugs, which also place significant financial burdens on healthcare and law enforcement.
One solution to tackling drug smuggling involves strengthening security procedures on ships, to detect, deter and prevent drug smugglers and crew member's understanding of their roles and responsibilities in implementing appropriate security measures is vital in combating drug trafficking at sea.
