Steamship Mutual was delighted to sponsor the WISTA UK Seminar and Golden Jubilee Reception, held in the House of Lords. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of WISTA (Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association), recognising five decades of advancing gender diversity, leadership, and professional excellence in the maritime industry.

The day began with an insightful seminar featuring two engaging panel discussions, each addressing pivotal issues and achievements within the maritime sector.

WISTA 50

The first panel discussion saw WISTA’s founding members share personal stories from their careers and reflect on the evolution of the maritime sector over the past 50 years. The panel provided unique insights into the challenges faced and progress achieved, highlighting WISTA’s instrumental role in fostering change and shaping a more inclusive industry.

The second panel explored the impact of national and international legislation on the maritime workforce, including the Employment Rights Bill, the Seafarers’ Wages Act, and the forthcoming updates to the Maritime Labour Convention. Moderated by Helen Kelly, Director of Communications at Nautilus International, the discussion underscored the progress made in ensuring fair wages and better working conditions for seafarers. It also emphasised the need for continued efforts to address inequalities and empower women in maritime roles.

The seminar was followed by an evening reception, which served as a fitting celebration of WISTA UK’s Golden Jubilee. With an inspiring keynote address by Lord Jeffrey Mountevans, Chairman of the Baltic Exchange and a long-standing supporter of WISTA, the event brought together maritime professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders to recognise the achievements of WISTA and its vital contribution to the maritime sector.
Steamship Mutual has supported WISTA’s work over many years, including at its International Conferences, and we are proud to have members across our global offices who actively engage in its initiatives. Our sponsorship of this milestone event reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering inclusion, innovation, and collaboration within the maritime community, ensuring it continues to thrive and evolve.
