Australia: Pollution fines increase

Club correspondents HWL Ebsworth of Sydney have reported that from 1 July 2020 the majority of states within Australia have increased their fines in relation to pollution.

Key points in the article by Chris Sacre of HWL Ebsworth include:

  • Maximum pollution fine for owner/charterer increased to AUS$22.2 million;
  • Maximum pollution fine for a master increased to AUS$4.44 million; and
  • CPI (Consumer Price Index) increases to pollution fines in coastal waters of Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania
