Members who operate container vessels should note that CINS (Cargo Incident Notification System) has just published guidance on the stowage of dangerous goods on board containerships. This publication was developed by a working group of representatives from CINS, the International Group of P&I Clubs, Classification Societies, regulators and containership operators. The publication is entitled “ Safety Considerations for Ship Operators related to Risk-Based Stowage of Dangerous Goods on Containerships”.

This publication is intended to supplement the requirements of the IMDG Code, the SOLAS Convention, and individual operators’ procedures for the safe stowage and carriage of dangerous goods onboard containerships, and to help safeguard against the growing number of cargo incidents onboard container vessels which have resulted in loss of life and personal injury, loss of or damage to vessels and their cargoes, and harm to the environment.
