Further to our previous updates on the situation in Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Club would like to highlight the renewed escalation of Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the region. The attached JMIC Advisory reports on two incidents where vessels have been attacked by multiple small craft using USV’s, small arms, RPG’s and missiles, resulting in crew injuries and severe damage to the vessels.
Key Risks:
- Increased likelihood of military escalation affecting commercial shipping.
- Heightened threat to vessels affiliated with Israel or the U.S.
- Potential for retaliatory strikes on merchant vessels in the region.
Mitigating Actions for consideration include:
- Engage with Maritime Security Authorities
- Maintain communication with naval co-ordination centres such as UKMTO
- Requesting military escort or assistance where available.
- Undertaking thorough affiliation checks before transiting these high-risk areas.
- Closely monitoring regional developments and adjusting routes as appropriate.
- Conduct crew security drills, ensure personnel are briefed on emergency procedures.
