Cyber Security USCG Recommendations
The United States Coast Guard has issued a Marine Safety Alert describing an incident where a vessel’s shipboard computer network suffered a cyber attack. This has led the USCG to issue a set of recommendations to vessels to help improve their cybersecurity.
The Coast Guard found that although most crew members did not use onboard computers for personal matters, the level of onboard security was not sufficient. This highlights the need for continued vigilance both on board and ashore.
The USCG Safety Alert 06-19 of July 2019 can be read here .
In addition to the USCG Safety Alert, we also draw Members attention to information available on the Steamship website.
Version 3 of the Guidelines on Cyber Security onboard ships has been produced and supported by BIMCO, CLIA, ICS, Intercargo, Intermanager, Intertanko, IUMI, OCIMF and World Shipping Council.
