USCG Marine Safety Information Bulletin 05-23
Fire Safety on Small Passenger Vessels (SPVs)

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), acknowledging the number of fire related incidents on Small Passenger Vessels (SPV’s) during the last 12 months have issued a Marine Safety Information Bulletin (MSIB Number 05-23) in recognition of the need for a renewed focus on fire safety on SPV's.

USCG is initiating a two-fold safety concentrated inspection campaign:

  • A focused self-assessment by owners and operators of all SPV’s
  • A Coast Guard led concentrated inspection campaign

The concentrated inspection campaign will include additional inspections of some SPV’s initially certificated prior to 1996 that carry 100 or more passengers.

Members seeking clarification on this latest USCG MSIB are advised to forward their questions directly to the USCG Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance, Domestic & Offshore Compliance Division (CG-CVC-1) by email at [email protected]

Club’s Members are advised to bring this latest USCG MSIB Number 05-23 to the attention of their masters and seafarers, and to conduct their self-evaluation prior to the Coast Guard’s scheduled attendance using the Checklist in the MSIB Number 05-23.
