The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is charged with the responsibility for ensuring the safety of Australian flagged vessels and foreign flagged vessels in Australian ports, and the seafarers on board.

International and national conventions and regulatory frameworks provide the standards enforced by AMSA.

The authority has recently issued a direction for cruise vessels carrying over 100 passengers to limit sulphur emissions while at berth in Sydney Harbour.
