Piracy - Best Management Practices - BMP5

BMP5, the 5th edition of the shipping industry’s “Best Management Practices to deter piracy” has now been released. It replaces BMP4 issued in 2011. BMP5 focuses on measures to deter piracy and enhance maritime security in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. It has been produced with the participation of various organisations including the International Group of P&I Clubs.

A companion document has also been published: “Global counter piracy guidance for companies, Masters and seafarers.” This too has been produced with the cooperation of the International Group of P&I Clubs

Additionally, a new website has been launched www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org. This website provides a wealth of information and links, with sections on Piracy, Cyber Security, Migration, Stowaways, Smuggling, Armed conflict and war. It has sections on specific geographic regions: Gulf of Guinea; South East Asia; Mediterranean; Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin, Arabian Sea. The website is maintained by various organisations including the International Group of P&I Clubs.

BMP5 and “Global counter piracy guidance for companies, Masters and seafarers” are available to download from the website above. Links can also be found at the bottom of this page. We recommend copies are placed in all member’s vessels and that the officers and crew are familiar with the contents.
