Steamship and Sustainability
At Steamship Mutual, we support our Members in achieving their ESG and sustainability goals, recognising that ESG principles provide a strong foundation for long-term sustainability.
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles underpin our sustainability strategy and guide all aspects of the Club’s operations. Across management activities, this includes working conditions, staff welfare, responsible resource use, energy and water consumption, waste management, risk management, underwriting practices, and claims handling.
The insurance protection we provide to Members also supports ESG objectives by managing risk and mitigating the consequences of maritime casualties. This includes minimising environmental damage, facilitating wreck removal, ensuring prompt and fair compensation for pollution-related liabilities, and supporting medical care for injured or ill seafarers.
Loss prevention is central to the Club’s sustainability agenda. Key initiatives include condition surveys to identify potential P&I risks, risk awareness bulletins and training materials, the Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME) scheme to ensure seafarer fitness, and access to 24/7 mental health support services for crew.
We also support our Members in advancing their own ESG and sustainability goals, including the transition to low- and zero-carbon fuels, compliance with evolving regulations, and the adoption of new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Steamship Mutual recognises the relevance of seven out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals as most pertinent to its business activities. How the Sustainable Development Goals apply to our activities can be seen in the following sections.

"Steamship Mutual and its Managers remain committed to fulfilling the Club’s primary insurance function in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. It is of the utmost importance that material sustainability topics are embedded into the vision, mission, values and objectives of the Club and the Managers at the corporate level, to ensure they are continuously considered."
