Maritime Security Advisory - Red Sea Region (19 Nov 2023)

Published: November 20, 2023

The maritime sector faces heightened security risks in the Red Sea, highlighted by the recent hijacking of the Bahamas-flagged GALAXY LEADER by Yemen's Houthi rebels.

This incident, coupled with escalating regional tensions and threats against shipping, underscores the urgent need for increased vigilance. The United States and the United Kingdom have responded by enhancing their naval presence.

Vessels are advised to follow recommendations from the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) and Coalition Task Force Sentinel, including heightened alertness for drones, mines, and potential pirate activities. The situation demands rigorous security measures and cooperation with international maritime authorities to ensure safe passage through this critical shipping lane.

Lastly, we would recommend that vessels communicate either with the UKMTO or US Naval Forces Central Command of their movements ahead of time or in the event that there is reason for elevated concern.
