Ballast Water

Following the ratification by Finland of the Ballast Water Management Convention, the convention is expected to come into force on 8 September 2017. The Convention will require all ships to implement a Ballast Water and Sediments Management Plan. All ships will have to carry a Ballast Water Record Book and will be required to carry out ballast water management procedures to a given standard. Existing ships will be required to do the same, but after a phase-in period.

In December 2016, the United States Coast Guard type approved three BWMSs. The type approved systems currently available treat ballast water with filtration and either chlorination (EC) or ultraviolet light (UV) to reduce the number of living organisms to less than the regulatory limits. Information on the U.S. type approved is available on this link.
