Two recent groundings of bulk carriers in the Parana River have led the Argentinian Coastguard to issue draft restrictions.

The current rules, Provision SNAV, NA9 No 028/2007 (as outlined here) will be superseded by a new regulation that becomes compulsory 60 calendar days from its ratification date  of 26 September 2016 until 24 February 2017.

Under the new regulations an additional increase to the minimum underkeel clearance of 0.60 metres will become applicable in the following areas:

Section Parana River (Timbues – San Martin – San Lorenzo Ports) – Parana de las Palmas River up to Km. 57:

• For vessels with a draft equal to or over 10.36 and up to 10.49 meters, an increase of three centimetres (3 cm) per additional centimetre of draft.

• For vessels with a draft equal to or over 10.50 meters, 10% of the static draft.

Section Parana de las Palmas River from Km. 57 up to Recalada Pilot Station:

• For vessel with a draft equal to or over 10.36 and up to 10.67 meters, an increase of one point five centimetres (1.5 cm) per additional centimetre of draft.

• For vessel with drafts equal to or over 10.68 meters, 10% of the static draft.

The minimum underkeel clearance for vessels with a draft less than 10.36 metres remains at 0.6 metres.

The Club advises members to contact their local agents to make sure the information on underkeel clearance is accurate.
