US Certification of JCPOA

President Trump has determined that US participation in the JCPOA may continue but four conditions must be satisfied by way of legislation to be passed by US Congress:

1. Congress must demand that Iran allow immediate inspections at all sites requested by international inspectors.

2. Congress must ensure that Iran never even comes close to possessing a nuclear weapon.

3. The above conditions must have no expiration date, and if Iran does not comply US nuclear sanctions would automatically resume.

4. The legislation must explicitly state that long-range missile and nuclear weapons programs are inseparable, and that Iran’s development and testing of missiles should be subject to severe sanctions.

President Trump also calls on European participants in the JCPOA to cooperate to ensure that these aims are secured by means of a separate agreement to the JCPOA within 120 days.

A four-month countdown now begins, at the end of which it is possible that the US will cease to comply with its obligations under the JCPOA. The next sanctions waivers fall due on 12 May 2018.
