Club would like to bring to Members attention the recent Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) publication Guidelines for the Safe Carriage of Charcoal in Containers. This publication is intended to supplement the requirements of the IMDG Code and individual operators’ procedures.

While Charcoal shall be transported in compliance with the requirements set out in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code), these guidelines recommend additional precautions to enhance safe carriage of the cargo (including proper preparation, declaration, packaging and carriage). It is important to note that although described as ‘Carbon’ in dangerous goods regulations, this document uses the term ‘Charcoal’ – except where further distinction is required.

The latest guideline supersede all previous charcoal guidance published by CINS.

This guideline is published by CINS in conjunction with the International Group of P&I Clubs and the TT Club. Other CINS publications can be downloaded here.
