Barranquilla, Colombia - Grounding Risk

November 2010

PDF Version

A&A Multiprime have recently advised of a possible grounding risk at Barranquilla, Colombia. This is the result of an excessive amount of sediment being carried into the channel by the Magdalena River and without sufficient dredging operations to deal with the problem. In the last month three vessels have grounded in the river while entering the port of Barranquilla.

Masters should ensure that pilots are using the most recent local bathymetric charts and that echo sounders are used while passing through the channel. Furthermore, it is very important that ship's officers on the bridge work closely with pilots at all times.

With thanks to A&A Multiprime for supplying this information.
